Officials in northeast Iowa say a fertilizers spill reported early Thursday is likely much larger than crews initially thought. In an update from the Iowa DNR, the incident at Gavilon in Dubuque might have spilled up to a million gallons of liquid fertilizer. DNR staff also says that some of the fertilizer possibly flowed into the detention basin along 16th Street. The Dubuque Fire Department’s hazardous materials team was called to the scene near Kerper Boulevard and East 12th Street about 6:15am to help contain the spill. Officials with the Iowa DNR are still investigating the spill – but at this time it does not appear to have caused a fish kill.
