A Dubuque man – wanted on 1st-degree murder and firearms charges – was arrested by federal authorities in Michigan on Tuesday. According to a report from the US Marshals Service, investigators tracked 25-year-old Deonte Ellison to a home in Kalamazoo (Mich). Ellison was taken into custody about 10am Tuesday without incident. He was wanted for fatally shooting 25-year-old Curtis Smothers Jr of Dubuque on July 2nd. Police say Ellison and Smothers were arguing on Loras Boulevard near Bluff Street. The confrontation escalated into a physical altercation. Ellison pulled a gun from his waistband, shot Smothers in the chest and fled the scene. Smothers was taken to Mercy-One Dubuque Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Ellison is awaiting extradition to Dubuque – authorities say he’s being held at Kalamazoo County Jail.
