Grass carp (Wisconsin DNR)
An investigation by the Wisconsin DNR has led to charges against the operator of a wholesale fish dealer near Platteville. According to a DNR report, Li Fish Farm allegedly sold Asian carp illegally in 2018 and 2019. The fish farm operator faces four charges of possessing illegal fish and a fifth charge of violating vehicle ID requirements when transporting fish. Wildlife officials classify Asian carp as Wisconsin’s most prominent and highly destructive invasive species. The investigation found nearly all the carp sold or transported by the dealer had been completely intact and therefore illegal in Wisconsin. Although the carp were not in water tanks when illegally transported into Wisconsin, the species retains the ability to be revived once returned to water. The case is pending in Dane County Circuit Court. Additional citations for similar violations are expected from the DNR Bureau of Law Enforcement. Li Fish Farm is located south of Platteville near Hummingbird Road off Highway 151.
