Two People Die in Two Vehicle Crash Near Maquoketa

Two people died following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday outside of Maquoketa, while two more were injured. 68 year old Gary Schlapia of Maquoketa and 61 year old Michael Griffin of Maquoketa dies at Regional Health Center in Maquoketa following the accident. The Iowa State Patrol reports that those injured in the wreck were 74 year old Devere Clinton of Elkader and 20 year old Ervin Miller of Edgewood, both of whom were taken by ambulance to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center. The crash occurred at about 5 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of U.S. Highway 61 and Hurstville Road north of Maquoketa. A crash report states that Clinton was driving north on the highway when a car driven by Schlapia going south tried to make a left turn to get onto Hurstville Road. The car entered the path of Clinton’s truck.
