Volunteers spent part of their holiday weekend cleaning up trash along rivers and creeks in Dubuque County. Julia Rodewald (ROHD-walled) says they found plastic bottles, cans, and some cigarette butts at the John Deere Marsh near the Mississippi River Saturday. Workers also recovered “sediment traps.” Used in landscaping or construction projects to keep soil in place, they’re supposed to break down biologically, but these didn’t. Rodewald is a land and water steward with the Green Iowa Ameri-Corps, a program based at the University of Northern Iowa.
