Eastern Iowa Drag Racer Dies in Crash

Authorities say an eastern Iowa man died following a drag-race crash Sunday at a race track in Delaware County. According to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, 74 year old Gary McMann of Marengo, died Sunday at Regional Medical Center in Manchester. According to a report, authorities responded at approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday to Tri State Raceway in Earlville. Authorities say McMann had completed a race in his dragster when the vehicle failed to slow down or deploy a parachute. The vehicle continued through a sand-trap safety area and left the dragstrip, flipping into an adjacent cornfield. Officials with National Hot Rod Association are investigating the crash, along with the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department and the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner.
