Iowa deer hunters will have an additional piece of information to report after bagging a buck this fall. Hunters will need to inform the Iowa Department of Natural Resources whether the length of the main antler beam on their harvest is below or above 14 inches, but not the exact length. Iowa State University and Iowa DNR are collaborating on a study that includes recording the age and antler measurements of more than 1,000 Iowa bucks. A report says that for roughly 95% of the deer measured, deer with antler beams less than 14 inches were one-and-a-half-years old or younger, and deer antler beams 14 inches and over were two-and-a-half-years old or older.
