Jo Daviess County Officials Warn Of Another Phone Scam

The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department is warning area residents against a new phone scam where the caller pretends to be a member of local law enforcement. The department has received several recent reports of the scam. A release states that the scammers are calling businesses and asking for employees by name. When that person takes the call, the scammers then claim to be a member of the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department calling to tell the individual that they have an active, unpaid warrant. The callers then provide information on how to wire money to resolve the issue, which in reality allows them to steal victims’ money. In a news release, the department advised the public that deputies would not call community members and tell them to wire money to resolve a warrant and that any unprompted calls asking for personal information is probably a scam.
