Man Steals Over $40,000 From His Mother-in-Law

Authorities say a Dubuque man stole more than $42,000 from his elderly mother-in-law to fund his gambling activities. 54 year old Shawn Small was arrested at 10 a.m. Friday in the 6000 block of Chavenelle Road on a charge of financial exploitation of an older individual-first offense. A report says the administrator of a care facility the elderly woman was living at discovered in December that a large sum of money had been taken from the woman’s bank account over the 2023 calendar year. A police investigation revealed that Small had become his mother-in-law’s financial power of attorney in September 2022, and stole money from her account using ATM transactions.
