A state agency is reporting an unvaccinated three-year-old quarter horse stallion in Grant County has tested positive for West Nile Virus. It is the state’s first confirmed case of West Nile Virus in a horse this year. The Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection documented nine cases last year, including one in Iowa County. While people can be infected by West Nile Virus, it cannot pass directly from horses to humans. The only way of transmission is from a mosquito. There are five human cases in Wisconsin this year.
