For the second year, the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and its partners, chiefly the Dubuque County Food Provider Network, The Other Side and the University of Dubuque, hope to soften loneliness and hunger pangs with a free Thanksgiving feast. Last year, the coalition of organizations, including the Dubuque County Food Provider Network as a food donor, estimates it served over 2,000 people, taking up the mantle of the event after the Ginter family ended its over-60-year run. The event was overwhelmingly supplied using community donations and volunteer service hours. This year, Jason Neises, community development officer with the foundation, says preparations are underway to prepare an equal number of meals. This year’s Dubuque event will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 27, serving traditional Thanksgiving fare at multiple host organizations, including Bread of Life Church, Crescent Community Health Center, Dubuque Rescue Mission, Hills & Dales Lifetime Center, St. John’s Episcopal Church and Salvation Army. In East Dubuque, The Other Side bar will prepare an in-person lunch to be hosted at Culbies Event Center next door from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
