The US Senate Agriculture Committee held a hearing on two bills that Senator Chuck Grassley says would improve fairness and competition in the cattle industry. The Iowa Republican says his measures would restore transparency in the marketplace and protect it from collapsing when there are supply chain disruptions. Grassley’s Meat and Poultry Special Investigator Act would create a dedicated office at USDA to investigate anti-competitive behavior in the ag industry. He points out that the nation’s four major meatpackers Cargill, Tyson Foods, JBS, and National Beef Packing – control up to 85-percent of the hog, cattle, and chicken markets.
