The Dubuque Fire Department responded to a residence on Sarah Street shortly after 3pm Sunday after a resident digging in their backyard discovered what is believed to be an unexploded WWII-era mortar round. As a precaution, all approximately 25 properties in the neighborhood were evacuated and Sarah Street was blocked to all traffic. Maryville Street was also blocked to all traffic from Kaufmann Avenue to Kane Street. In addition to the Dubuque Fire Department and Dubuque Police Department, the State Fire Marshall was called upon and removed the mortar and took it to another location where it was detonated just before 7pm.
