One-point-four-million dollars in federal funds are available through Iowa Legal Aid for derecho victims. The money can be used for getting legal advice and representation in cases connected to the destructive August 2020 storm. Cedar Rapids managing attorney Lisa Gavin, a Dubuque native, says about 200 people have reached out for help, asking questions about rentals and the availability of federal money. She says the office now hears from about 15-to-20 people a week. Gavin says based on what happened following the 2008 flood she thinks the situation will take years to resolve.
