The Cascade City Council had a lengthy conversation with Police Chief Fred Heim about how best to enforce the city’s latest snow removal policy at a council meeting this week. Initially, the council planned to hire an individual to patrol the town after each snowfall and distribute door-hanger notifications to property owners who had not cleared their sidewalks within 24 hours of snow accumulation. After many members of the public expressed disapproval with this, council members changed their minds and gave the job to the police force. The past couple of weeks have seen 20 inches of snow in less than 10 days, bitterly cold temperatures and high winds. Heim raised several issues with the enforcement system. Heim particularly noted the issue of the two-man police force not having enough time to dedicate to the job and the unfairness of people being penalized for snow that was blown back onto their walks after they had shoveled.
