The city of Dubuque has secured an $8 million federal grant to help pay for a flood mitigation project along Bee Branch Creek. The grant was allocated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program following a request for community project funding from U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Dubuque, according to a news release. The $8 million will go toward the Bee Branch stormwater pumping station project at the 16th Street detention basin. Improvements are expected to cost $28 million and will include the construction of new floodgates and increasing and updating flood pumps, among other steps. The project is one phase of the larger Bee Branch Watershed Flood Mitigation Project. City officials expect to begin the public bidding process this year in hopes of completing the pump station project in 2027.
