A first-term Iowa state law-maker will contend for a Congressional seat this fall. Republican Ashley Hinson from Marion defeated Winneshiek County businessman Thomas Hansen in Tuesday’s primary. Hinson will face Democrat Abby Finkenauer of Dubuque in a race for Iowa’s 1st District US House seat. Finkenauer beat GOP incumbent Rod Blum in 2018 for the post. The Republican National Congressional Committee has named Hinson a Contender on the 2020 national Young Guns list of candidates.
Also – a Des Moines real estate developer, Theresa Greenfield won her Senate primary in Iowa yesterday. Greenfield emerged as the top vote-getter among 5 total Democratic candidates. She’ll take on incumbent Republican US Senator Joni Ernst in November.
Representative Steve King of Iowa, a nine-term Republican, lost his bid for renomination early Wednesday, one of the biggest defeats of the 2020 primary season in any state. King was defeated by Randy Feenstra, a state senator, who had the backing of mainstream state and national Republicans.
