The City of Dubuque’s Health Services Department is joining other local public health leaders, including Dubuque County Public Health, the Dubuque Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), and infection prevention specialists from both local hospitals in urging residents to remain vigilant as influenza activity continues to increase. An earlier-than-usual increase in flu cases is being seen this year, and current trends do not yet show a decline in flu activity. According to a press release from the City last week, both local hospitals have reported an increased number of patients with influenza, placing added strain on health care systems and highlighting the seriousness of the current surge. Local health officials place the strongest emphasis on staying home when sick as the most effective way to slow the spread of influenza. The City of Dubuque Health Services Department and local healthcare partners also recommend annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older.
