The Dubuque City Council has made it official – both municipal pools will not open this summer. The vote came Monday night to keep Flora and Sutton swimming pools shut down in 2020. The move is mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic – plus the safety issues created by not being able to monitor social distancing. Dubuque City Council members also looked at the financial situation for the community. The upcoming fiscal year shows an estimated $12-million dollar loss in revenue because of coronavirus-related costs. Even if they had re-opened, city staff says it would have taken three weeks to get the pools ready and to train all employees – giving children about a month before school starts again.
