After an Iowa DNR investigation, agency officials report that more than 400-thousand gallons of liquid fertilizer spilled last week in Dubuque. The fertilizer overflowed from storage tanks at Gavilon when a pump was left running during a transfer from a barge. Iowa DNR officials say they discovered several species of fish dead in the nearby 16th Street detention basin. Staff also tested rainwater run-off from the Gavilon parking lot and detected elevated ammonia levels. The main site of the spill has been contained, but rain likely washed some of the fertilizer into the basin. Iowa DNR officials are monitoring the cleanup and are still considering what, if any, appropriate enforcement action to take.
