His team announced his death in a statement, celebrating a career built around fashion and costume design. Mackie became especially known for sequins, feathers, rhinestones and dramatic silhouettes that looked at home under bright stage lights.
Cher was one of his most famous collaborators, wearing his creations at concerts, award shows and major public appearances. His work also appeared on Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Elton John, Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus and Pink.
New generations continued embracing his archive. Sabrina Carpenter wore vintage Mackie designs, while other contemporary performers brought his distinctive glamour back to red carpets and performances.
Mackie won nine Emmy Awards and a Tony Award during his career. His costumes remain closely tied to the performers who wore them, reflecting decades when fashion became an essential part of music and live entertainment.
